Kunst x Wetenschap x Samenleving

To collaborate between arts and sciences in the context of fundamental and applied issues related to society provides new perspectives on issues such as climate, ecology, economy, digital transitions, loneliness, AI, ageing, and more.

Currently, collaboration between arts and sciences takes place on a small scale and often in a fragmented manner across many different initiatives. As a result, it remains a sum of its parts rather than a multiplication of them.

Art science society – KxWxS – aims to bring about change. Change by making visible what is happening, systematically investigating its significance, and strengthening its role for society, with the arts, with sciences

KWS is a collaboration of the Academy of Arts and the Young Academy (both part of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences – KNAW), Kunsten ’92, and Waag Futurelab.

On behalf of the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science, a working conference took place on June 11, ’24, at the Trippenhuis and in the Waag, focused on existing and future exemplary collaborations between arts and sciences in the context of fundamental and applied issues related to society. During this conference, representatives from the represented sectors were asked to provide their vision on how to better and more strongly shape this collaboration.

Prior to this, the Young Academy and the Academy of Arts wrote a letter to the then-minister Robbert Dijkgraaf. Liesbeth Bik, Meta Knol, and Marleen Stikker later wrote a position paper titled ‘Zet creativiteit in voor de toekomst van Nederland’  (Harness Creativity for the Future of the Netherlands). KWS was asked to draft a so-called fiche to be presented to the new Minister of Education, Culture and Science (OCW), and following the working conference, to formulate a policy recommendation. Here you will find the introductory and inspiring text by Meta Knol from the working conference.
